Latvian naturalisation exam questions
The knowledge part of the naturalisation check asks about Latvian history and culture, the basic provisions of the Satversme and the national anthem. The questions cover the facts every resident is expected to know, and they can be worked through in a few weeks of short daily sessions.
Three parts and how many answers you need
History and culture: 10 questions, at least 7 correct. Basic provisions of the Satversme: 8 questions, at least 5 correct. The text of the national anthem has to be written without mistakes in its content. Those thresholds are what the knowledge part comes down to, so it is worth counting your practice results the same way rather than in percentages.
Studying with the 149 cards
The card set covers history, culture, state symbols and the Satversme. Each card carries a translation and audio, so you hear the Latvian wording before you try to produce it. Mark every card as learning or known, and let the weak ones come back more often. Twenty cards a day covers the whole set in a little over a week.
Typical topics that come up
Expect dates and turning points from Latvian history, the state symbols of flag, coat of arms and anthem, and the basic provisions of the Satversme: who holds sovereign power, how the Saeima is elected, which rights and duties are named. Cultural questions deal with well-known figures, traditions and the song festival.
Where the official material comes from
PMLP sets the content of the check and runs an e-tool for self-assessment; that is the official reference, and registration happens only at pmlp.gov.lv. This site is an independent study tool, not a PMLP resource, and its texts are prepared with language models and checked programmatically.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Latvian history test?
The history and culture part has 10 questions and at least 7 must be correct. The Satversme part has 8 questions with at least 5 correct. On top of that you write out the text of the national anthem, which must be free of mistakes in content.
What level of Latvian do I need for citizenship?
The language part is graded skill by skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking, 25 points each, with at least 16 points, or 64 per cent, needed in each one. The knowledge questions are answered in Latvian as well.
Can I prepare for free?
Yes. The 149 cards with translation and audio, the timed exam simulator, the letter samples and the anthem trainer are all free and need no registration, no account and no payment.
How many times can I retake the exam?
A check that is not passed can be taken again. After a third unsuccessful attempt the naturalisation case is closed, although a new application may be submitted at any time. Check the current rules at pmlp.gov.lv.
