1.Kāda ir Latvijas valsts iekārta?

What is Latvia's form of government?

Answer: Neatkarīga demokrātiska parlamentāra republika.

An independent democratic parliamentary republic.

A republic does not have a hereditary monarch as head of state. In a parliamentary system, government needs parliament's confidence, giving the Saeima a central role. Dividing powers among parliament, government and courts helps prevent all authority from concentrating in one set of hands.

2.Kura ir Latvijas galvaspilsēta un kad tā dibināta?

What is the capital of Latvia and when was it founded?

Answer: Rīga (dibināta 1201. gadā).

Rīga (founded in 1201).

Riga developed beside the Daugava as a centre of trade and power. The traditional founding date of 1201 does not mean nobody lived there earlier. Capital status concerns national government, while the foundation date belongs to the city's much older history.

3.Kāda ir Latvijas naudas vienība un kad to ieviesa?

What is Latvia's currency and when was it introduced?

Answer: Eiro; ieviesa 2014. gada 1. janvārī.

The euro; introduced on 1 January 2014.

The euro replaced the Latvian lats. Joining the EU in 2004 and adopting the euro in 2014 were separate events. A shared currency makes payments and price comparisons with other euro-area countries easier.

4.Kura jūra apskalo Latviju?

Which sea washes Latvia's shores?

Answer: Baltijas jūra.

The Baltic Sea.

Latvia has both an open Baltic coast and a Gulf of Riga coast. The gulf is part of the Baltic Sea, not a separate sea. The coast influences ports, fishing, tourism and local weather.

5.Kura ir garākā upe Latvijā?

What is Latvia's longest river?

Answer: Daugava.

The Daugava.

The measurement matters: the Daugava is longer along its entire international course. The Gauja has the greatest river length within Latvia. Geographical records therefore need to specify whether they compare an entire feature or only its part within a country.

6.Kurš ir lielākais ezers Latvijā?

What is Latvia's largest lake?

Answer: Lubāns.

Lake Lubāns.

Largest lake usually means greatest surface area. It is not the same as deepest lake or greatest water volume. Lubāns is broad and shallow, showing that a large surface area does not necessarily mean great depth.

7.Kurš ir dziļākais ezers Latvijā?

What is Latvia's deepest lake?

Answer: Drīdzis.

Lake Drīdzis.

Drīdzis lies in lake-rich Latgale. Depth measures the distance from water surface to bed, not the lake's area. The lake's maximum depth exceeds 60 metres, so its record concerns depth rather than its size on a map.

8.Kāds ir klimats Latvijā?

What is Latvia's climate like?

Answer: Mērens (mērenā klimata josla).

Temperate.

Climate describes long-term conditions rather than one day's weather. The Baltic moderates temperature extremes, while continental influence grows inland. Coastal and eastern areas can therefore experience different temperatures in the same season despite sharing one climatic zone.

9.Kas ir Latvijas parlaments un cik tajā deputātu?

What is Latvia's parliament called, and how many members does it have?

Answer: Saeima; tajā ir 100 deputātu.

The Saeima; it has 100 members.

MPs are elected representatives, not ministers. The Saeima passes laws and scrutinises government; its hundred seats are allocated through elections. The parliamentary majority matters for governing, while the opposition also takes part in debate and can demand explanations.

10.Kas vada valdību (Ministru kabinetu)?

Who heads the government (the Cabinet of Ministers)?

Answer: Ministru prezidents.

The Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister coordinates ministers and government policy. The President holds a different office as head of state; the titles are easy to confuse. The prime minister is politically accountable to parliament, so leading the government is not a power independent of the Saeima.

11.Kas ir Latvijas pamatlikums?

What is Latvia's fundamental law?

Answer: Satversme.

The Constitution (Satversme).

Satversme is the name of Latvia's Constitution. It provides the foundation for other laws and defines institutions and fundamental rights. The Constitution has higher legal authority than ordinary laws, which must comply with its principles.

12.Kas ir Satversmes tiesa?

What is the Constitutional Court?

Answer: Institūcija, kas kontrolē likumu atbilstību Satversmei.

The body that reviews whether laws comply with the Constitution.

Even a law passed by parliament must comply with the Constitution. Constitutional review helps prevent a political majority from violating higher legal principles. Its role differs from a court resolving, for example, a debt dispute or a criminal charge.

13.Kas ir naturalizācija?

What is naturalization?

Answer: Pilsonības iegūšana noteiktā kārtībā — nokārtojot valodas un zināšanu eksāmenu.

Acquiring citizenship through the established procedure — by passing an exam on the language and required knowledge.

Naturalisation is a citizenship procedure, not merely a language test. Legal eligibility conditions also apply, with exemptions available to certain applicants. PMLP explains the procedure and documents, while this trainer helps develop only part of the knowledge required.

14.Vai Latvijā ir atļauta dubultpilsonība?

Is dual citizenship allowed in Latvia?

Answer: Jā, bet tikai ar ES, EBTA un NATO valstīm, Austrāliju, Brazīliju un Jaunzēlandi; ar citām valstīm — tikai ar Ministru kabineta atļauju.

Yes, but only with EU, EFTA and NATO countries, Australia, Brazil and New Zealand; with other countries only with Cabinet of Ministers permission.

Dual citizenship means holding citizenship of two states. Permission is not universal; the other country and the basis of acquisition matter. A general answer must therefore be distinguished from assessing an individual's circumstances under the law.

15.Vai Latvijā ir obligātais valsts aizsardzības dienests?

Is there compulsory national defense service in Latvia?

Answer: Jā (valsts aizsardzības dienests).

Yes (national defense service).

National defence service has legally defined eligibility, selection and exceptions. It does not mean every Latvian resident is automatically conscripted. The service prepares people for national defence, with specific obligations set out in official rules.

16.Kas ir pašvaldība un kas to ievēlē?

What is local government, and who elects it?

Answer: Vietējā vara; to ievēlē iedzīvotāji vēlēšanās.

Local authority; it is elected by residents in elections.

Local government handles local matters such as infrastructure and services. Its council is elected by eligible voters, not every resident without exception. For example, residents often address local roads and schools through their municipality rather than directly through the Saeima.

17.Ko nozīmē apzīmējums “Māras zeme”?

What does the name «Māras zeme» (Land of Māra) mean?

Answer: Tas ir poētisks Latvijas apzīmējums.

It is a poetic name for Latvia.

The name is linked to historical Terra Mariana, the Land of Mary. Māras zeme can now be a poetic name for Latvia, not its official state name. Historically the name referred to Livonia and later also Latgale, so its meaning depends on context.
