If you are preparing for Latvian citizenship, the fastest way to see where you stand is to answer exam-style questions under time pressure. Pilsonība.lv is a free study tool: no registration, no adverts, with an interface in Latvian, Russian, Ukrainian and English.
What you can practise here for free
The naturalisation check has two halves and both are covered. For the knowledge part there are 149 cards on history, culture, state symbols and the Satversme, each with a translation and audio. For the language part there is a simulator with timers for all seven parts, six independent listening and reading sets, eight letter topics and twelve speaking situations.
How this practice test differs from the real exam
This is training material, not the examination. The real naturalisation check is taken in person under PMLP supervision, the writing part is done by hand and speaking is assessed by an examiner. Nothing you do here is scored officially and no certificate is issued. What practice gives you is familiarity: the format, the timing and the vocabulary stop being a surprise.
The official self-check tool
PMLP runs its own e-tool for self-assessment, and that is the official reference point for what the check contains. Registration for the examination itself happens only through pmlp.gov.lv. Use this site as everyday practice between sessions and treat the state institutions as the source of truth for rules, dates and procedure.
A simple way to start
Begin with one timed run of the simulator to get a baseline, even if the score is low. Then work through the cards in small batches, marking each one as learning or known, and repeat only the weak ones. Finish every session with one written letter and one speaking situation, so all four language skills get attention each week.
Frequently asked questions
What level of Latvian do I need for citizenship?
The language part of the naturalisation check is graded skill by skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking, 25 points each, with at least 16 points, that is 64 per cent, needed in every one of them.
How many times can I retake the exam?
An unsuccessful check can be taken again. After a third failed attempt the processing of the naturalisation case is terminated, but a new application may be submitted at any time. Confirm the current procedure at pmlp.gov.lv.
How much does the state language test cost?
The VIAA state language proficiency test carries a state fee of 52 euro; it is a separate procedure, needed for a permanent residence permit and EU long-term resident status. For fees that apply to naturalisation, check pmlp.gov.lv.
Can I prepare for free?
Yes. Everything here is free and needs no account: the 149 cards, the timed simulator, 24 letter samples, the anthem trainer, a grammar course of 10 modules and the 578 most frequent words.
Where do I register for the exam?
Registration goes only through PMLP at pmlp.gov.lv. This site does not register anyone, does not issue certificates and is not a PMLP or VIAA resource; it is an independent tool for practice.
