Latvian state language test A1, A2, B1
The state language proficiency test is run by the State Education Development Agency (VIAA) at six levels from A1 to C2. This trainer covers the first three — A1, A2 and B1 — with vocabulary, grammar and practice for all four skills.
Which level you need
A permanent residence permit and EU long-term resident status require at least A2. For professions and positions the level is set by Cabinet regulations — from A1 in service jobs to C1 for managers and teachers. Naturalisation has its own PMLP test, whose language part corresponds roughly to B1.
How the test works
Four parts — listening, reading, writing and speaking. You pass if you score at least 60 % of the maximum in every skill; failing one part means retaking the whole test. The state fee is 52 euro, waived for low-income persons. Registration and dates are on viaa.gov.lv.
How to prepare here
Start with the 12-minute diagnostic — it shows your level and weakest skills. Then: 578 frequent words by level (A1–A2, B1–B2), a grammar course with a level tag on every lesson, timed listening and reading sets, letters written to a plan with a scoring rubric, and speaking situations. The competence map shows what you have already covered at A1, A2 and B1.
