Module 07 · The verb: present tense · Darbības vārds: tagadne · Level A2
Verb government: which case and preposition each verb takes
Darbības vārdu saistījums ar prievārdiem un locījumiem
Government doesn't always match English, so a verb needs to be learned together with its case.
Dative (kam?)
| Verb | Example |
|---|---|
| palīdzēt (to help) | palīdzu mammai |
| zvanīt (to call) | zvanu draugam |
| ticēt (to believe) | ticu tev |
| patikt (to please, i.e. "to like") | man patīk |
| garšot (to taste good) | man garšo zupa |
| sāpēt (to hurt) | man sāp galva |
| derēt (to suit) | tas man der |
| traucēt (to bother) | netraucē man |
| piederēt (to belong) | tas pieder viņam |
| pietikt (to be enough) | man pietiek |
| uzticēties (to trust) | uzticos tev |
Accusative (ko?) — like in English, but check it
redzēt, dzirdēt, mīlēt, lasīt, ēst, pirkt, gaidīt (to wait for whom/what — accusative, not genitive!), jautāt (to ask someone — accusative: jautāju skolotāju), saukt (to call someone), satikt.
Genitive (kā?)
baidīties no (to be afraid of), atteikties no (to give up, to decline), izvairīties no (to avoid), trūkt (to lack: man trūkst laika), vajadzēt (man vajag naudas — sometimes genitive, more often accusative), pietrūkt.
With prepositions
| Verb | Preposition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| runāt, domāt, stāstīt, rūpēties, priecāties | par + accusative | runāju par darbu, rūpējos par bērniem |
| lepoties, iepazīties, nodarboties, sarunāties, tikties, precēties, apmierināts | ar + instrumental | lepojos ar dēlu |
| baidīties, atteikties, atkarīgs | no + genitive | baidos no suņiem |
| skatīties, cerēt, gaidīt (for), atbildēt (to), dusmoties | uz + accusative | skatos uz jūru, atbildu uz jautājumu |
| interesēties, gatavoties, piedalīties | par / — / locative | interesējos par mākslu, gatavojos eksāmenam (dative), piedalos sacensībās (locative) |
| pierast, ķerties, griezties | pie + genitive | pierast pie klusuma, griezties pie ārsta |
| ilgoties, skumt | pēc + genitive | ilgojos pēc mājām |
Traps for English speakers
- gaidīt takes the accusative: gaidu autobusu ("I'm waiting for the bus" — the noun itself takes no preposition in Latvian, unlike English "wait for").
- jautāt — the person you're asking is accusative, the topic is par: jautāju viņam? — no: jautāju viņu or uzdevu jautājumu viņam. Both are used, but jautāt kam also occurs — the dative is accepted too.
- precēties ar — literally "to marry with," not "to marry [someone]" the way English does it.
- piedalīties takes the locative: piedalos sacensībās ("I take part in the competition").
- interesēties par — literally "to be interested about," where English just says "interested in."
