Verbs with many meanings: dot, teikt, likt, tikt, celt and others

A handful of short verbs cover dozens of meanings — on their own and with prefixes. Knowing them means understanding half of everyday speech.

dot — to give

dodu, dod, dod, dodam · devu · došu. Atdot (to give back), iedot (to hand over), nodot (to hand in, to pass on), padot (to pass), pārdot (to sell), izdot (to publish; to issue), uzdot (to ask a question). Dod man, lūdzu! Pārdošana. Uzdot jautājumu.

teikt / sacīt — to say

saku, saki, saka · teicu · teikšu. Pateikt (to say, to tell), pasacīt, atteikt (to refuse), atteikties (to give up, to decline), izteikt (to express), noteikt (to determine). Ko tu teici? Paldies — nav par ko teikt.

likt — to put; to order

lieku, liec, liek · liku · likšu. Nolikt (to put down), ielikt (to put in), uzlikt (to put on, to place on top), atlikt (to postpone), pielikt (to add), salikt (to stack, to assemble), izlikt (to put out; to evict). Nolikt malā. Uzlikt cepuri. Liec grāmatu uz galda.

tikt — to get somewhere, to become; to be enough

tieku, tiec, tiek · tiku · tikšu. Satikt (to meet), satikties, notikt (to happen), iztikt (to get by), panākt (to achieve), tikt gatavam (to make it in time). Kas notika? Es netieku laikā (I don't make it in time). Kā tev tiek? Passive: tiek darīts (is being done).

celt — to lift, to build

ceļu, cel, ceļ · cēlu · celšu. Celties (to get up), uzcelt (to build), pacelt (to lift up), atcelt (to cancel), pārcelt (to move, to transfer), iecelt (to appoint). Es ceļos septiņos. Sapulce ir atcelta.

ķert — to catch

ķeru, ķer, ķer · ķēru · ķeršu. Noķert (to catch), saķert, pieķert (to catch [someone doing something]), aizķerties (to get caught on), ķerties pie (to get down to). Ķerties pie darba!

krist — to fall

krītu, krīti, krīt · kritu · kritīšu. Nokrist (to fall down), iekrist (to fall into), uzkrist, sakrist (to coincide), atkrist (to fall away), pakrist (to fall). Cenas krīt. Sniegs krīt.

rast — to find (literary)

rodu, rodi, rod · radu · radīšu. Mostly survives in prefixed forms: atrast (to find), atrasties (to be located), rasties (to arise), radīt (to create). Kur atrodas stacija?

rādīt — to show

rādu, rādi, rāda · rādīju. Parādīt (to show), izrādīt (to express), izrādīties (to turn out to be), norādīt (to point out), pierādīt (to prove). Parādi man! Izrādās, ka…

šķirt — to separate

šķiru, šķir, šķir · šķīru. Atšķirt (to distinguish), atšķirties (to differ), izšķirt (to decide; to make out), šķirties (to part ways, to divorce), nošķirt. Ar ko atšķiras? Izšķiroša nozīme.

rakstīt — to write

Uzrakstīt (to write down), pierakstīt (to note down), parakstīt (to sign), pārrakstīt (to rewrite), ierakstīt (to fill in; to record), izrakstīt (to write out), norakstīt (to copy off), aprakstīt (to describe).

sākt, saukt

sākt — to begin: sāku, sāc, sāk · sāku · sākšu; sākties (to begin, of an event), iesākt, uzsākt, sākums. saukt — to call, to name: saucu, sauc, sauc · saucu; Kā tevi sauc? (what's your name — literally "how do they call you"), saukties (to be called), izsaukt (to call out), pasaukt (to call over).
