Module 02 · The noun · Lietvārds · Level A2
Nouns Ending in -šana and -šanās
Lietvārdi ar -šana un -šanās
Almost any verb can be turned into a noun naming the action. This is one of the most productive ways to expand your vocabulary: know the verb, and you know the noun too.
How to form it
| Verb | Noun | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| lasīt | lasīšana | reading |
| rakstīt | rakstīšana | writing (the process) |
| mācīt | mācīšana | teaching |
| mācīties | mācīšanās | studying, learning |
| tikties | tikšanās | a meeting |
| iepirkties | iepirkšanās | shopping |
| dzīvot | dzīvošana | living, residing |
Rule: the infinitive stem (minus -t / -ties) + -šana for ordinary verbs, -šanās for reflexive ones.
Declension
-šana declines like an ordinary declension-4 noun: lasīšana, lasīšanas, lasīšanai, lasīšanu, lasīšanā.
-šanās is special: the reflexive particle stays attached, declension happens "inside" the word, and there are fewer usable case forms:
| Case | tikšanās |
|---|---|
| N | tikšanās |
| Ģ | tikšanās |
| D | — (not used; people say tikšanās reizei instead) |
| A | tikšanos |
| L | tikšanās (rare) |
In practice you need three forms: tikšanās (N/Ģ), tikšanos (A). Es eju uz tikšanos. (I'm going to a meeting.) Tikšanās laiks ir pieci. (The meeting time is five.)
