Diminutive Forms

Pamazinājuma formas

Latvians love diminutives — they turn up in songs, in how people talk to children, in food names, and even in official surnames. The suffix depends on the declension of the base word.

Decl. Suffix Example
1 (-s) -iņš galds → galdiņš, draugs → draudziņš (g→dz), koks → kociņš (k→c)
2 (-is) -ītis brālis → brālītis, skapis → skapītis
3 (-us) -iņš tirgus → tirdziņš
4 (-a) -iņa māja → mājiņa, māsa → māsiņa, roka → rociņa (k→c)
5 (-e) -īte meitene → meitenīte, upe → upīte
6 (-s, f.) -iņa / -tiņa sirds → sirsniņa, acs → acīte, zivs → zivtiņa

Sound changes before the suffix

k → c (koks → kociņš, roka → rociņa), g → dz (draugs → draudziņš), dz → dž, c → č, t → š/t, d → ž (bērns → bērniņš stays unchanged; puķe → puķīte).

Where you'll meet them
