The Preposition par: Special Cases

Prievārds par — īpašie gadījumi

par + accusative means "about," but it carries four more meanings you can't do without.

1. About (topic)

runāt / domāt / stāstīt / rakstīt / lasīt par + acc.: Runāsim par darbu. (Let's talk about work.) Es domāju par tevi. (I'm thinking about you.) Grāmata par Latviju. (A book about Latvia.)

2. As, in the role of

strādāt par + acc.: Es strādāju par skolotāju. — I work as a teacher. kļūt par — to become: Viņš kļuva par ārstu. (He became a doctor.) mācīties par — to study to become: mācos par programmētāju (I'm studying to become a programmer).

3. Comparison — than

lielāks par mani (bigger than me), vecāks par brāli (older than [my] brother), labāks par citiem (better than others). A synonym is nekā + nominative: lielāks nekā es.

4. For (payment, gratitude)

Paldies par palīdzību! (thank you for the help) maksāt par biļeti (to pay for a ticket) Cik par to? (How much for that?) Atvainojiet par traucējumu. (Sorry for the disturbance.)

5. "Too" and degree

par daudz (too much), par maz (too little), par dārgu (too expensive), par vēlu (too late), par agru (too early): Tas ir par dārgu. (That's too expensive.) Es atnācu par vēlu. (I arrived too late.)

6. Change — into

pārvērsties par (to turn into), mainīt par (to exchange for), sadalīt par (to divide into).

Don't confuse: par and pār

pār (with a long ā) means "over, across": pār upi (across the river), pār galvu (over one's head). par covers all the meanings above.

Common in speech

Par ko tu domā? (what are you thinking about) · Par ko tu strādā? (what do you work as) · Paldies par visu! (thanks for everything) · Tas ir par daudz! (that's too much) · Priecājos par tevi (I'm happy for you) · Es par! (I'm in favor!) · Runa ir par to, ka… (the point is that…).
