The three conjugations — how to tell them apart
Trīs konjugācijas
Regular verbs belong to three conjugations. Būt, iet, dot are irregular and learnt separately. Compare the infinitive and first-person singular present and past forms.

How to check
Put the verb into the es form: - -ju after a long vowel → 2nd conjugation (runāju, dzīvoju, meklēju). - -u with a stem shorter than the infinitive by one vowel → 3rd conjugation (lasīt → lasu, gribēt → gribu). - stem ends in a consonant and barely changes → 1st conjugation (braukt → braucu, nākt → nāku).

The examples show tu runā / viņš runā; tu lasi / viņš lasa; tu brauc / viņš brauc. These are not universal patterns: I includes tu nāc / viņš nāk, III includes tu gribi / viņš grib.
Subgroups of the 3rd conjugation
Conjugation III has subgroups. Verbs in -īt, -ināt and zināt have third-person -a: lasa, raksta, māca, zina. Many others have a zero ending: grib, var, redz, dzird. Check each verb’s principal forms.
