The verb būt and negation

Darbības vārds būt. Noliegums

būt (to be) is the foundation: it builds "I am a teacher," "I have," "I am cold," and all the compound tenses too.

Present tense

es esmu mēs esam Es esmu skolotājs.
tu esi jūs esat Vai tu esi gatavs?
viņš / viņa ir viņi / viņas ir Viņa ir mājās.

The main point to watch: in the present tense the linking verb is never dropped — just like English, where "I am" is required too (not "I student"). Es esmu students. Rīga ir skaista.

Negation

The negative particle ne- is written joined to the verb: esmu → neesmu, ir → nav, runāju → nerunāju, gribu → negribu.

Affirmative Negative
es esmu es neesmu
tu esi tu neesi
viņš ir viņš nav ← special form
mēs esam mēs neesam
jūs esat jūs neesat
viņi ir viņi nav

nav is the only irregular negative form in the language, but also the most common one: Man nav laika. Viņa nav mājās. Tas nav grūti.

"I have / I don't have"

Man ir brālis. — I have a brother (nominative). Man nav brāļa. — I don't have a brother (genitive after nav!). This is the only case where negation changes the case of the noun.

Past and future

past future
es biju būšu
tu biji būsi
viņš bija būs
mēs bijām būsim
jūs bijāt būsiet
viņi bija būs

Vakar es biju slims. Rīt būšu mājās. Kur tu biji?

Negating other verbs

ne- + any form: Es nesaprotu. Viņš nestrādā. Mēs nebraucām. Double negation with pronouns is obligatory: Es nekad nekavēju.
