Plural with prepositions — always the dative
Daudzskaitlis ar prievārdiem
A rule that makes life much easier: in the plural, every preposition takes the dative, no matter which case it governs in the singular.
| Preposition | Singular (its own case) | Plural (dative) |
|---|---|---|
| ar | ar draugu (Acc.) | ar draugiem |
| pie | pie drauga (Gen.) | pie draugiem |
| no | no mājas (Gen.) | no mājām |
| uz (to) | uz veikalu (Acc.) | uz veikaliem |
| uz (on) | uz galda (Gen.) | uz galdiem |
| par | par bērnu (Acc.) | par bērniem |
| bez | bez grāmatas (Gen.) | bez grāmatām |
| pēc | pēc stundas (Gen.) | pēc stundām |
| zem | zem galda (Gen.) | zem galdiem |
Plural dative endings
Masculine declensions (1–3): -iem. Feminine: 4th -ām, 5th -ēm, 6th -īm. With softening in the 2nd declension: brāļiem, skapjiem.
